I'm a Girl Who...

While I focus throughout the year on the different elements of writing to get my students ready for AIMS (Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards) I also throw in a lot of free verse poetry to give students an opportunity to express their ideas.  This writing piece is done in the beginning of the year.

Title: I'm a Girl Who/ I'm a Boy Who
Objective: TSW develop a list of  descriptive phrases that describe their personal traits to add voice and good word choice to their writing.

I introduce this lesson by creating a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast myself and my husband.

I show them how we enjoy some similar things, however we also enjoy different foods and hobbies. I take this moment to express how while we are different, we also truly enjoy each others company. This writing assignment is an opportunity for students to brag about the kind of boy or girl they are. We make a list of adjectives that will add voice and good word choice to their sentences. Lastly, students use Photo Booth to take a picture of themselves and add it to their writing piece. Below is my example  I share with my students. It's always important to model writing for your students and when you share your deepest thoughts, feelings, and secrets with them, you capture a piece of their heart!
